PS3 Custom Firmware

Evilnat has released version 4.92.2 of the PS3 Custom Firmware

It primarily offers features for overclocking the RSX. More on this below.

PS3 Evilnat 4.92.2 CFW

Evilnat 4.92.2 CFW Cobra 8.5 - [June 2025]

In addition to the CEX, PEX, and D-PEX variants, versions for PS3 with defective Bluetooth [NoBT] and defective Blu-ray drive [NoBD] are also available.

The available versions of the CFW

We basically differentiate between 3 versions:

CEX: Consumer (Retail) Version- The common version for 97% of users. So if you are not a developer, you should install this version.
PEX: Ported DEX version- incorporates features and modules from DEX firmware, effectively porting DEX functionalities to a CEX environment.
D-PEX: Debug Ported DEX- includes functionalities ported from CEX firmware, enabling users with DEX consoles to access features typically found in CEX firmware.
NoBD (CEX/DEX): for consoles with defective bluray drive
NoBT (CEX/DEX): for consoles with a defective bluetooth module
NoBD+NoBT (CEX/DEX): for consoles with defective bluray drive and defective bluetooth module

Notice

As can be seen in the new features (see below), the DEX versions have been removed.

If you want to use DEX features, you can install the PEX version. However, to avoid errors, you should install the D-PEX version first. In any case, you should Enable QA Flags before update in the menu.

CFW DEX → Update to CFW D-PEX → Update to CFW PEX.

If you want to switch from DEX to CEX, you should also install the D-PEX version first. Enabling QA Flags before update is also recommended here.

CFW DEX → Update to CFW D-PEX → Update to CFW CEX.

The installations can be performed via USB and the XMB; the recovery menu is not required.

Installing the firmware

If you are already on custom firmware, no matter what version, or on original firmware not higher than 3.55, you can easily install the CFW with a USB stick (FAT-32) via the XMB. The recovery menu is not necessary for this.

However, if you have installed original firmware with a version higher than 3.55, you must first downgrade (assuming you have a suitable PS3). You can find more information about this in this post.
